Step 1 - Settling Down (Important)
First, let the baby lovebird get used to it's new home; the cage, every where outside the cage (room/house/objects) and of course you. Talk sweetly and friendly to the lovebird.
Step 2 - Friendship
Take the lovebird out of the cage every day; once or several times a day. Let the lovebird sit and look around on several places outside the cage and also on you (shoulder/belly) for a long time. While you watch television or read a book etc. Touch the lovebird when it let's you.
Step 3 - Biting
Start touching and petting the lovebird. Walk around with the lovebird, let the lovebird get used to you more and it's new home outside the cage. Touch the lovebird on his head, feathers, legs, but gently, feed the lovebird seeds with your hand or give the lovebird toys/objects to play with. The better the lovebird to this, the better he won't start biting and wanting to be close to you and hug.
Step 4 - Training: Step-Up, Step-Down
Let the lovebird sit on your finger. Step-Up help; slowly and gently push your finger against the bird's lower chest, right above his legs - the lovebird will step- up. Step-Down help; give a little gentle push under his tail so the lovebird ofcourse won't fall forward, but just enough for the lovebird to step-down. Repeat this many times a day and continue with this every day as long needed.
Step 5 - Taming
Let the lovebird fly around in the house, but the lovebird must step-up on your finger if the bird stays away too long. Or let hem fly to you by whistling, talking or making sounds to lure the lovebird to you. I teached the lovebird to fly and land on my shoulder, by tapping on my shoulder. Repeat this daily and put the lovebird on the shoulder if it lands not on you shoulder.
Tip 1 - Clipping Feathers Yes/No
I had some feathers clopped of the lovebird, so the lovebird would not fly away (too easy) or too often or too far. It can improve taming your lovebird. The instructions of this article made my lovebird tame quickly and effective.. and the lovebird flew away all the time anyway. So, no clipping needed in my opinion!
Tip 2 - It's Not a Dog
Does the lovebird behave badly repeatedly (biting/not listening), than put the lovebird back in the cage as ''punishment''. Take the lovebird out of the cage again 10 minutes later and don't punish the lovebird again; it learned it's leston. When the lovebird misbehaves, I also make contact with the lovebird so i know the bird watches and listens to me and than i say with a low voice; ''Bad Bird, don't do that, no no no''. Several people say, that doesnt work. It's not a dog... woof, but it works on my lovebird and improved the bird's behaviour!
Tip 3 - Let them play & Learn
Lovebirds are very curious and ''Travellers''. They want to bite everything or travel with you every where you go, just to observe what you do or even ''Help'' you.... give the lovebird this fun and let the lovebird play around with toys and objects inside and outside the cage. Give the lovebird love...
